Benefits:
- Jobs created
- Wealth
- Infrastructure (roads, airports, facilities, attractions- locals can use)
- New cultures
- Raises standards
- New skills/training
- Raise profile of country
Negatives:
- Poorly paid jobs, seasonal jobs
- Economic leakage (money goes back to western companies, e.g. hotels)
- Loss of culture (foreign companies, e.g. McDonalds)
- Crime/drugs (locals take advantage of tourists with money)
- Environmental damage (travelling, litter)
- Annoying for locals
Demonstrate an understanding that careful management of tourism is required in order for it to be sustainable
Sustainable tourism: doesn’t damage the environment and helps local communities
- Conserve wildlife and culture of area
- Benefit local people and involve the local community
- Profit without destroying natural resources, or taking advantage of locals

Why has become a touristic attraction?
Physical :
- Tropical climate, over 24°C most of year
- Landscapes- beaches, islands (Ko Phi Phi), mountains (near Chang Mai)
- Wildlife, vegetation, coral reefs (Andaman sea)
Human:
- Culture, history, buddhist temples, ancient capital, history from WWII
- Party scene and nightlife
- Shopping (Bangkok)
- Good infrastructure, services (airport, hospitals, roads, hotels, attractions)
- Relaxing destinations for meditation, yoga, massage, etc
Positives:
- Brings foreign currency, creates wealth
- Large no. of jobs that don’t require skills
- Improved infrastructure for tourists helps locals
- Helps modernise the country for standards that tourists want
- Farmers, craft makers sell goods to tourists
- Helps maintain local cultures and traditions, e.g. Sonkran(water festival)
Negatives:
- Loss of culture (western companies) and respect (wearing inappropriate clothes, visiting Kayan- long necked women)
- Problems with sex tourism
- Economic leakage (many attractions owned by foreign companies)
- Only provides low skilled jobs
- Environmental damage, e.g. damage to coral reefs, littering beaches, overcrowded/dirty beaches
- Increase in crime and drugs
