3.4- effectiveness of agencies in social control Flashcards
Explain this limitation of the police achieving social control: racism+bias
Macpherson report: police= institutionally racist-Stephen Lawrence - incompetent in investigating offences sucessfully- failed to gather evidence+ investigate leads
What are the other 2 concerns of racism in the police?
- stop+disproportionaely used again at black +other minority ethnic groups
-tasers= used disproportionately too.
Explain this limitation of the police in achieving social control:dark figure of crime
Police can only investigate crimes that are reported to them. If no one knew the offence took place+ the police dint record it then it becomes a dark figure of crime. Possibly bc of: fear, shame, disinterest
Explain this strength of police achieving SC: accuracy of statistical evidence
Police statistics suggest police= becoming less effective. H/E: crime rate has increased as the police have became better at recording crime. 2014- didn’t meet the standards required by the office for national statistics, so greater proportion are now in statistics
Explain this strength of the police in achieving SC: offences of public concern
Police= made progress in prioritising offences e.g DA. 2/3 of domestic abuse practititioners felt police approach had improved.
What do statistics show about crime recorded and clear up rates?
CR incr. 2016-2020 4.5m to 5.8m. Clear up rate decreased. 15% to 7%
What’s re the two reasons why police are failing to clear up cases?
- Police have decided to drop cases TF failing to investigate crimes including. Serious crimes. Btwn 2013-2018 police dropped 525,000 cases on the day they were reported
- Budget cuts- gov made major cuts, causing police to drop investigations
Explain this strength of the police in achieving SC: specialist policing
Specialist units who are experts, =more effective in achieving SC e.g HM revenue+customs deal with tax evasion+ British transport police deal w/nuclear installations
