2.1- forms of social control Flashcards
define internal forms of control
controls over our behaviour that come from within ourselves such as our personality+values
what does internal forms of control lead to?
to conform to society+groups
describe the moral conscience
we conform bc our superego tells us too. part of our personality with the id and the ego. superego tells us whats right and wrong+restrains the id and inficts guilt if we act on the id which leads to anti-social bhevaiour+criminality. develops through socialisation.
define social control
persuading or compelling people to conform to soxietys norms, laws and expectations
what do control theorists believe is the reason to obeying the law?
our bonds to society
describe the 4 reasons why individuals bond to society?
- attachment
-commitment
-involvement
-belief
- more attached we are to others, more we care ab their opinion, more we will respect there norms
2.how committed we are to conventional goals=more committed to conventional lifestyle=more we risk losing
3.more involved in law abiding activties=less time to get involved in criminal activities
4.if we have been socialised to believe it is right to obey the law we will
What are the 3 internal forms of control
- rational ideology
- tradition
- internalisation of social rules and morality
What are the two external forms of control
- coercion
- fear of punishment
How can tradition+culture be an internal form of control?
Culture we belong too becomes a part of us through socialisation, we accept its values, norms, traditions as a part of our identity e.g religious traditions like fasting during Ramadan for Muslims. Conforming=important in being accepted in a part of a community. TF: ensures we don’t break the law
Describe internalisation of social rules and morality as an internal form of control
We internalise social rules+morality through socialisation and they become part of our inner self. These values start from outside of us e.g superego=parents+values, tradition= culture+social groups. These lead us to conform willingly as they become part of our own rules+moral code
What is rational ideology?
Term used to describe the facts e internalise social rules+use them to tell us what is right and wrong, enabling us to keep in the law
What is coercion as an external force of SC
Use of threat/force in order to do/stop something. Force can be physical/psycholgical.
E.g sanctions in CJS=all forms of coercion e.g sending sm1 to prison prevents offending
What are agencies of social control?
Organisations that impose rules on us to make us behav in certain ways includ. Family, per group, education system
What do agencies of control echo?
Echo skinners operant learning theory
Agencies enforce neg sanctions (punishments)+ pos sanctions(rewards) that can help impose SC
Give four agencies in the criminal justice system that impose SC, explain how they do this
Police: powers to stop, search, arrest, detain, question suspects
CPS: charge a suspect+prosecute them
Judges/magistrates: power to bail the accused/remand them in custody+give various sentences
Prison: detain prisoners against will for duration of their sentence+punish. Pos+neg sanctions e.g assisting prosecution =shorter sentence
