- parishes give leaflets on healthcare
- established the ORP ( office for refuge policy) which enables catholics to get involved in refugee work
- Westminster cathedral has annual migrant mass
Explain how or why the UK became a multi ethnic society (multi faith society, 1) Britain accepts people of all faiths UK law protects them, [bring with them different cultures and religious beliefs])
- UK has always offered asylum to those suffering persecution
- always been a mixed society, celts, Romans, Saxons.
- in the 50’s there was a substantial immigration form the commonwealth
- 19th century UK built up an empire around the world. They all could resettle in the UK.
Explain why discrimination and racism could cause problems in a multiethnic society
- alienated groups may end up fighting against society
- politicians believe minority ethnic groups turn to crime as they feel unable to get well paid jobs
- Muslims turn to extreme Islamic groups (Isis) due to the racism they have experienced
- racism can lead to rise of extreme groups like British national party
How the government promotes community cohesion
- financially supporting groups that work for social cohesion
- appointing cabinet ministers, judges from ethnic minorities
- passing the race relations act which makes it unlawful to discriminate against someone due to race
- teach community cohesion in schools
Why community cohesion is important
- bombers on the London Underground were British citizens who lost their sense of alliance with Britain
- in communities without cohesion violence can become a way of life
- lack of cohesion results in different communities leading separate lives
- lack of cohesion leads to racially/religiously motivated street rioting
What are the benefits of living in a multi-faith (multiethnic) society
- people can learn about different religions and cultures
- people more understanding of other people’s beliefs
- tolerance of different religions exists in multi faith society’s stoping religious conflicts
- people think more seriously about religion as they learn from each other
Why/how have attitudes changed to the role of men and women
- women have more freedom in employment due to WW2
- suffragette movement to gain equal voting rights
- industrial developments meant that there was need for more women workers
- social developments led to the need for second income families (house prices rising, recession)
Different Christian attitudes to equal rights for women in religion
(Catholic)
- Genesis God created men and women at the same time and both in the image of God
- catechism teaches that we are all equal
- laity men and women can participate in service of the church e.g. Reading at mass, alter servers
- catechism teaches only men can be priests because the apostles were all men, and priests and bishops were successors of the apostles
Differences among Christians in their attitudes to other religions
All believe in religious freedom
Catholics
-Christianity is truth as teaching of church in catechism
-Jesus is the son of God who shows what God is like
-bible teaches that salvation comes through believing in Jesus, though God can be contacted by other religions
Evangelical
- Jesus said he was the only path to God
- converting others is the way to love them as its the only way of achieving salvation
- Jesus said Christians have to convert all the nations
Liberal Protestant
- do not regard bible as word of God
- God is a force like gravity which can be discovered by humans in different ways
- other religious people live good holy lives
- they believe there is room for other religions in heaven
Issues raised for religion by a multi faith society
Conversion
- Religions try to convert other religions as they believe their faith is the one true faith and only through that can you achieve salvation
- but this leads to aggressive behaviour as people feel insulted when others say their faith is wrong
Bringing up children
- most religions encourage parents to bring up their children in the teachings and beliefs of their own religion
- however this could lead to them being u accepting of others faiths leading to bullying etc
Inter faith marriages
- difficult as usually both people have to be of the same faith to have a religious wedding ceremony
- difficult as they don’t know which faith to bring up their children in
Ways in which religions work to promote community cohesion in the UK
- working to discover what is the same about religions
- helping with interfaith marriages
- making sure that all children learn about different faiths
- joining local and national (inter faith network for the UK) groups to promote community cohesion
Explain how an issue from religion and community cohesion has been presented in one form of the media
(Vicar of dibley)
Unfair- community seen as backwards putting people off religion
Unfair-there is shown to be some evidence of racism and sexism which is not a accurate representation of the Catholic Church
Fair-as that could be seen as a normal reaction to a woman vicar as the community are very traditional
Fair-majority of characters have good intentions and display Christians love of others
