- ORGANISE the magisterium & make sure it’s up to date

Role of the bishops?
- look after NEEDS of PRIESTS and LAITY
- RESPONSIBLE for priests in the diocese & make sure they are carrying out their duties properly
- APPOINT and ORDAIN the priests and deacons
- the LINK between the Vatican and parishes allowing the popes reach to be throughout the church
Celibacy of the clergy why it’s important to Catholics?
- FOLLOW In Jesus’ footsteps e.g. Christ’s disciples on earth
- TRADITION handed down from St. Paul.
- priests can be completely DEVOTED to God and their parish
- they are not DISTRACTED by their own family issues
Why other Christians allow priests to marry?
- ST PETER was married
- married priests can better UNDERSTAND their laity to give them better advice
- celibacy PUTS PRIESTS OFF e.g. Catholic Church has a shortage
- believe that by loving a family you are also loving God and set a good ROLE MODEL for the laity
Meaning of the Church as the body of Christ?
- christians continue the work of Jesus and are his physical PRESENCE on earth
- Jesus lives on through his followers, his body on EARTH
- church has the RESPONSIBILITY to care for the poor, sick and the hungry
- like a body has different parts, each Christian has a UNIQUE PART to play in carrying on the work of Christ.
Importance of the church as the body of Christ?
- in the BIBLE, St. Paul describes the church in the New Testament
- explains why MASS is so important. Christians gather together as one body and receive the body of Christ
- Christians continue the work of Christ on EARTH
- each have a UNIQUE VOCATION to fulfil but part of one body
Against church as body of Christ?
- lots of different Christians denominations, not one body
- Many Christians do not carry out Jesus’ work
- some Christians even priests commit grave sins that harm the church
Meaning of the Church as the communion of saints?
- communion of saints is the belief that we are in relationship with those in PURGATORY and in HEAVEN, not SEPARATED
- saints can INTERCEDE and PRAY for all of us on earth
- Catholics can PRAY for the dead
- important to remind us that we each play a part in others achieving SALVATION
