3.3 Pressure in gases Flashcards
What happens when blowing up a balloon
There are loads of air molecules hitting the inside of the balloon, the collisions between air molecules and balloon produce gas pressure (air pressure)
What is happening inside a balloon
The collisions of air molecules make a high gas pressure because there is a big force over a small area.
-gas pressure is exerted in all directions
Changing volume, what will happen if you squash the balloon
There will be more collisions between gas molecules and the balloon. Pressure increases
What differences will occur when you cool down the temperature
Its molecules move more slowly, if the item doesn’t change shape the pressure decreases.
There is also fewer collisions with the sides
Cold gas =
fewer and less energetic collisions
Hot gas=
more collisions that are more energetic
As you pump more gas into a bicycle wheel the gas becomes compressed.
Q1- more/less molecules- more/less collisions
Q2- is the force big or small
Q1- more molecules- more collisions
Q2- big because the pressure is big
Atmospheric pressure definition
Pressure caused by the collisions of air molecules that produce a force on an area
State what happens to the Atmospheric pressure as you go up a mountain
the smaller Atmospheric pressure makes it hard for mountain climbers to breathe in enough oxygen. They usually take up tanks when they climb high.
What do tanks contain
oxygen gas that has been compressed into a small volume
