3.1 Speed Flashcards
Explain how speed measures
Speed measures of how far something travels in a particular time
What do we measure speed in in science
Metres per second
Maths of calculating speed
speed (m/s)= distance travelled (m) time taken (s)
Work out this equation
A long distance runner runs part of his race at a steady speed. it takes him 20 seconds to run 100m
speed= 100
20s
=5m/s
What is meant by instantaneous speed
The speed at a particular moment. For example the speed a marathon runner is running at is instantaneous because they aren’t running at exactly the same speed throughout the race
How do we work out the average speed
By dividing the total distance by the total time it took to run the race
State an example of relative motion
Have you ever looked out of the window of a stationery train in a station at a moving train and felt that your train is moving?
Relative motion definition
the difference between the speed of two moving objects or of a moving and stationer object
