3.3 Photosynthesis Flashcards
describe the process of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their own food.
describe the chloroplast structure
disc like structure with outer membrane and inner membrane, contains stacks of membrane containing chlorophyll.
what is the photosynthesis word equation?
water + carbon dioxide = chlorophyll + light energy = sugar + oxygen
Name stage one of photosynthesis
Light reactions
Name stage two of photosynthesis
Carbon-fixation
Describe stage 1 of photosynthesis
water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using light energy absorbed by chlorophyll this is called photolysis, the oxygen diffuses out of the cell as a bi-product. Light energy joins ADP to Pi forming ATP this is call photophosphorylation.
Describe stage 2 of photosynthesis
In a serious of enzyme controlled reactions, therefore temperature dependent uses hydrogen and ATP (from stage 1) with carbon dioxide to produce sugar.
State the fates of sugar
- Glucose in respiration
- Converted into starch for storage
- Converted to cellulose for structural use
Summarise photosynthesis
light energy from sun
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
trapped by chlorophyll
IIIIIIIIIIIIIII carbon dioxide
light reaction = water +
oxygen hydrogen
bi-product = sugar
State the site of photosynthesis
Chloroplasts
Name the type of energy absorbed by plants during photosynthesis
Light energy
What is the equation for ATP
ADP + Pi + Energy = ATP
What is the role of carbon dioxide in the second stage of photosynthesis?
combines with hydrogen to form glucose through a series of enzyme controlled reactions.
Name the limiting factors of photosynthesis
light intensity
carbon dioxide concentration
temperature
