- literacy levels in prisons has decreased - 62% of prisoners have literacy skills of an 11 y/o
- amount of people achieving qualifications fell in 2017-18
- plans for more prisoner apprenticeships but has still not been bought into action
- receive a discharge grant of £76
- no housing benefits if served 13+ weeks

A
  • these are basic rights or freedoms given to citizens
  • include freedom of speech, movement, arrest, assembly, religion and association
  • limits SC as people have these freedoms so it restricts agencies using it against people

facts + cases : abu qatada
- 2012 - ECHR ruled the hate preacher could not be deported to Jordan in risk of him bei g tortured to obtain evidence
- he would have been deported long if the ECHR did not create these new ‘unprecedented’ rules which blocked his deportation

A
  • public sector funding has been limited and there has been cuts in budgets which limits effectiveness of agencies in achieveing SC
  • budgets were slashed by £300m leading to more pressure on staff and so more of them leaving
  • funding depends on
    1. political party in power
    2. environmental status
    3. status quo

facts + cases
- house of commons reduced funding by 25% in 2011-2015 - less no of officers
- hm prison sentence had a £900m cut and so more attacks on staff and more were leaving
- many cases where prisons have been seized and power overtaken which shows theres inability for SC if budget cuts take place

A
  • some crimes are being prioritised while other crimes are being neglected
  • e.g gang crime - police funded it £1.2m and introduced preventions but other crime was neglected

- mayor of ldn : introduced policing plans to tackle hate crime such as increasing terror squad
- cps - focused on certain policies such as social media and homophobia
- amount of forms of crimes reported increased but they remain underreported

  • e.g assisted suicide

- administered her daughter drugs to help her die
- drastic action out of sympathy and she believed she was morally right but it is still a crime
