3.2.3 forces+stresses+enhancing Flashcards
compression
pushing force is applied to either end of a material
bending
both tension and comopression. tension on one side, compression on the other
torsion
material is twisted
tension
pulling force is applied to either end of a material
shear
acts in a direction perpendicular to its length
explain one force acting on a pair of pliers when gripping a nail head
the handles will be subject to a bending force. the outer edges of the handle will be under tension whilst the insides will be under slight compression . there will be a shear force acting on the pivot/fulcrum when the pliers are squeezed around the nail head
reinforced meaning
strengthened by the addition of other materials
strengthened meaning
made stronger or more rigid to resist certain forces
bending - enhancing materials
adding curves and arches and tubes can add a considerable amount of strength to products. using minimum amount of material
webbing
strong fabric made from high strength material. usually woven into flat strips and used for items under high tension, eg. a seatbelt
folding
can add strength to a material as well as flexibility, by enabling a material to bend easily. used in corrugated cardboard
lamination
polymer and paper laminate provides papers/cards to be protected from moisture and to add stiffness. eg. laminated menus so if anything spills on it, it can be easily wiped off
state and describe one enhancement that helps a fan resist and work with different forces
the fan is folded, which adds strength and flexibility by enabling the material to bend easily
explain the term lamination (on paper)
process of adding thin layer of plastic to sheets of paper to protect it from moisture and to add strength
