3.2 Flashcards
The. heart definition
a muscular organ that fills with blood returning from the body in the veins and contracts to force blood away through the arteries
what does the heart do
the heart is a pump that contacts forcing blood throughout the body via the blood vessels delivering nutrients to the working muscles and removing waste products such as carbon dioxide
right side of the heart
pulmonary circuit delivers deoxygenated j blood to the lungs
the hearts 4 chambers name
right atrium left atrium at the top right ventricle and the left ventricle at the bottom
valves
prevent blood from flowing backwards as the chambers contract
right ventricles
pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs throughout the pulmonary circuit
ventricles
the two chambers at the base of the heart have thick muscular walls to pump blood throughout the body
as the atria contracts
blood is forced directly downwards and into the ventricles the ventricles have thick muscular walls as they need to pump blood over much greater distance
left side
the systemic circuit delivers oxygenated blood to the body tissue
right atrium
feels with deoxygenated blood returning from the body
atria
the two chambers a6 the top of the heart contract forcing blood downwards into the ventricles
left ventricles
pumps deoxygenated blood to the body through the systemic circuit
left atrium
fills with oxygenated blood returning from the lungs
atrio ventricular valves
located between the atria and ventricles prevent blood from flowing back into the atria as the ventricles contract
semi lunar valves
located at the entrance to the two arteries that direct blood away from the ventricles prevent blood from flowing back into the ventricles
