3.2 Flashcards
What is the role of the cerebrum?
controls conscious thought, emotions, movement and memory
What is the role of the cerebellum?
controls balance and co-ordination
What is the role of the medulla?
controls involuntary actions, such as heart rate and breathing rate.
What is the role of the hypothalamus?
releases hormones for the endocrine system, controls body temperature, and regulates emotional responses.
Describe the localisation of the brain.
The cerebral cortex has localisation of brain functions, meaning that certain parts of the brain are in charge of certain functions.
Give 5 examples of functional areas of the brain
- sensory processing
- motor control
- vision
- language processing
- conscious thought
Most functions of the cerebrum have functional areas, so any answer that encompasses a role of the cerebrum is accepted.
What is the function of the cerebral cortex?
the centre for conscious thought. It recalls memories and alters behaviours in light of past experiences.
What is the role of the corpus callosum?
to transfer information between the cerebral hemispheres
How is the cerbrum split into two halves?
the cerbrum is split by a deep cleft into two halves called the cerebral hemispheres
What is the function of the left hemisphere?
processes information from the right visual field and controls the right side of the body.
What is the function of the right hemisphere?
processes information from the left visual field and controls the left side of the body.
What is the role of sensory areas?
to receive information as sensory impulses from the body’s receptors
What is the role of the association areas?
to analyse and interpret these sensory impulses which are sent to the motor areas.
What is the role of the motor areas?
to receive information from the association areas and send motor impulses to the appropriate effectors.
What are association areas involved in?
- language processing
- personality
- imagination
- intelligence
