2.1 Flashcards
Where in the testes is sperm produced?
in the seminiferous tubules
Where in the testes is testosterone produced?
in the interstitial cells surrounding the seminiferous tubules
What is the role of the prostate gland and the seminiferous tubules?
They produce fluid that maintains the mobility and viability of sperm and provides sperm with the energy to swim.
What do the ovaries contain?
thousands of immature ova cells in various stages of development.
What is the role of the follicle?
every ovum cell is surrounded by a follicle. The follicle protects the ovum and secretes hormones such as oestrogen.
Describe the journey a male gamete takes to lead to fertilisation
testes - sperm duct - urethra - vagina - uterus - oviduct - egg cell
Describe the journey a female gamete takes to lead to fertilisation
ovary - oviduct - sperm travels to fertilise egg cell
What is produced when a sperm cell fertilises an ovum?
a zygote
What does the seminal vesciles secrete and what does it provide?
secrete liquid rich in fructose. This sugar provides sperm with the energy needed for mobility following their release by the male at ejaculation.
What does the prostate gland secrete and what does it provide?
secretes a thin, lubricating liquid containing enzymes which help to maintain the medium for optimum sperm mobility.
The collection name for this liquid is semen.
What happens following ovulation?
the follicle develops into a corpus luteum, which secretes the hormone progesterone.
