3.1.7 - Oxidation, Reduction and Redox Flashcards
1
Q
What is oxidation?
A
The process of electron loss / increase in oxidation number
2
Q
What is reduction?
A
The process of electron gain / decrease in oxidation number
3
Q
Define oxidation state
A
The number of electrons lost or gained by an atomic in a compound compared to the uncombined atom.
4
Q
Define oxidising agent
A
A reagent that oxidises (removes electrons from) another species.
It itself gains electrons.
5
Q
Define reducing agent
A
The species that reduces another element.
(electron donors)
It itself is oxidised.
6
Q
What are the steps for balancing redox in acidic conditions?
A
- Balance Oxygen using H20
- Balance Hydrogen using H+
- Balance Charge
7
Q
How do you balance equations using oxidation states?
A
- Write oxidation states of individual elements above the compound
- Work out what has been oxidised/reduced
- Write out half equations, then combine them
- Balance the remaining elements
