Repeated exposure to serious, or personally significant, incidents over period of time may cause stress related problems. This is referred to as what type of stress?
Cumulative stress
How should command reduce exposure to stressful incidents?
Rotating personnel, and removing initially responding personnel as soon as possible.
This type of intervention is done by either a FD CIS team member or professional counselor.
One-on-one
This type of intervention is done by two FD CIS member, with no professional counselor involved, preferably before going off shift in which the incident occurred. Lasts 30-45 minutes.
Defusing
This type of intervention is conducted by a professional counselor and FD CIS team members, within 72 hours of, but after 24 hours of the incident. This type of intervention is formal and lasts 1-2 hours.
Debriefing
This type of intervention is rare. Usually occurs weeks or months after the incident where there is concern for delayed or prolonged stress symptoms. Can be done informally.
Follow up debriefing.
