(3.1.5.1) RNA Flashcards
what is RNA called?
ribonucleic acid.
what is RNA?
a polymer of nucleotides chemically joined together by condensation reactions forming phosphodiester bonds.
what is the function of RNA?
to transfer genetic information from DNA to the ribosomes.
what is the structure of a single RNA nucleotide?
includes a phosphate group linked to a ribose sugar, which is then linked to a nitrogen-containing base
- the possible bases can be uracil, adenine, guanine and cytosine.
give ways in which the nucleotides in DNA are different from the nucleotides in RNA.
- DNA contains deoxyribose sugar and RNA contains ribose sugar
- DNA has thymine as an organic base whereas RNA has uracil
- RNA is smaller than DNA
what is the role of mRNA?
to carry the genetic code out the nucleus to the ribosome for the formation of a polypeptide
what is the role of tRNA?
to carry specific amino acids to the mRNA at ribosomes for the formation of a polypeptide
what is the role of rRNA?
to form ribosomes with protein molecules
