3.1.4 Proteins and Enzymes Flashcards
What kind of protein are enzymes?
What level of structure do they have?
Globular
Tertiary
What does and enzyme do to a reaction?
Lowers the activation energy
How do enzymes lover activation energy?
Putting stress on the bonds within a molecule
By holding molecules closer together
This increases the chances of a reaction and so lowers the energy required (activation energy)
Enzymes can make the local conditions inside the active site quite different from those outside- this makes the reaction more lightly to happen
Describe a graph with rate of reaction(y-axis) and substrate concentration (x-axis)
Have a positive correlation until when a certain conc. is reached then the rate of reaction stays the same (the graph levels of) this is because max collisions are happening(the substrate is satisfying the volume of enzyme)
What is the lock and key theory?
Active site is rigid-however the crystallographic studies indicate proteins are flexible
What is the induced fit theory?
It suggest that the active site is flexible-the enzyme has a certain general shape but it alters slightly to accommodate the substrate placing stain on the substance molecule
