why is it important for employers and employees to follow health and safety rules at work
- it helps prevent accidents
- it ensures the business is a safe place to work
- ensures the food is safe to eat
what is the Health and Safety at Work Act ( HASAWA) 1974
This act says that
- employers must ensure that things like risk assessments are completed
- a health and safety policy statement is given to employees
- safety clothing’s are provided
Employees must ensure that they work in a safe why so they don’t put others in danger,
they need to follow the health and safety rules,
and they must wear the safety clothing provided to them by their employer
what is the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations ( RIDDOR ) 2013
- Requires employers to report certain workplace incidents to the health and safety executive ( HSE )
- dangerous occurrences such as collapse of equipment
- death and serious injuries such as serious burns
- work related diseases
- flammable gas incidents or dangerous gas fittings ( leaking gas or a faulty gas cooker)
- employees must ensure all injuries are recorded in an accident book
what is a health and safety policy statement
a written statement by an employer of its commitment to health and safety for employees and the public
What does the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations of 2002 state
- covers substances that are hazardous to health such as
- chemicals ( cleaning materials)
- fumes from machinery
- dusts from flour, icing sugar
- gases
hazardous substances must be stored, handled and disposed of using COSHH regulations
- they must be labelled as toxic, harmful, irritant, corrosive, exploding , oxidising
- must be identified on packaging
an employer must make sure the employees use of and exposure to these are kept to a minimum and employees must make sure they are trained to use these
Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR) 1992
- protects employees from injury or accident when lifting or moving heavy/ awkward shaped boxes or even frozen, sharp, hot things
employers must complete risk assessment whenever items need to be moved and also provide adequate training
employees must be trained in correct manual handling techniques such as ; always keeping your back straight while lifting, never reaching forwards, bending your knees and using the strength in your arms
PPER ( Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations) 1992
- clothing or equipment designed to protect the wearer from injury
- the regulations require employers to provide their employees with high quality clothing and equipment to employees who may be exposed to risk to safety at work
