Biological Species Concept
A group of organisms that freely interbreed to produce fertile offspring
New Species Definition
A group of organisms with similar characteristics that are potentially capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring
A group of organisms in which genes can flow between individuals
Mate Recognition Model
Based on unique fertilisation systems
Mating Behaviour
Genetic Model
Based on DNA Evidence
Evolutionary Model
Based on shared evolutionary relationships between species
DNA Profiling
Process of which coding areas are analysed to find patterns
1) PCR to amplify the DNA
2) Gel Electrophoresis
Separates DNA fragments by length
Shorter fragments move at faster rates towards +ve anode
3) Stain it- Can see DNA under UV light
Advantages of DNA Profiling
Can see a complete set of an organisms DNA
Disadvantages of DNA Profiling
DNA samples can degrade over time
DNA Barcodes
Each organism has its own barcode
Can be compared to another organism for classification
Used for pest control + food production
Bioinformatics
Used to decipher human genome
Can predict potential drug side effects
Can make personalised medicine
Compares genetic information with that found in biological databases
Peer Review
When biologists complete a study they write it in the form of an article which can be published
It will be read by other biologists who will test the validity of the results
If repeatable results can be made the findings are valid
