3.1 ATP Flashcards
What is universal energy currency ?
Used in all cells to drive all reactions.
What is ATP ?
Adenosine triphosphate, a characteristic in all living organisms
What is ATP made up of ?
Adenine base, ribose sugar and 3 phosphate groups
What is ATP broken down into ?
ADP + Phosphate + energy
What enzyme breaks down ATP ?
ATPase
What is the equation for respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
What is chemiosmosis ?
The flow of protons down an electrochemical gradient, through ATP synthetase, coupled with the synthesis of ATP from ADP and a phosphate ion
What is the inner membrane of the mitochondria used for ?
Respiration
What are chloroplast thylakoid membranes used for ?
Photosynthesis
What is the proton gradient ?
A fundamental characteristic of all living things
What is the electron transport chain ?
A series of proton carriers on the inner membranes of chloroplast and mitochondria that releases energy from electrons and puts it into ATP
What is phosphorylation?
The addition of a phosphate group
What is oxidative phosphorylation?
Synthesising ATP by ADP + P
