3.1 Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
Describe the coronal plane.
From ear to ear crossing top of skull
Describe the sagittal plane.
From nose to back of head across top of skull
Describe the transverse plane.
Cross section through body cutting through horizontally when in anatomical position
What do ipsilateral and contralateral mean?
Ipsilateral - same side
Contralateral - opposite side
What is dorsiflexion and plantarflexion?
Dorsiflexion - ankle flexing (decrease of angle between limbs)
Plantarflexion - ankle extending (increase of angle between limbs)
What are eversion and inversion?
Eversion -Rotate ankle so sole of foot points away from other foot
Inversion - Rotate ankle so sole of foot points toward other foot
Abduction and Adduction?
Abduction - move limb away
Abduction - move limb toward
Lateral rotation and medial rotation?
Lateral rotation - e.g. Rotate leg outward away from midline
Medial rotation - e.g. Rotate leg inward toward midline
Pronation and supination?
Arm flexed at 90 degrees…
Pronation - palm facing downward
Supination - palm facing upward
Retraction and protraction?
Retraction - Arm at shoulder moves posterially
Protraction - arm at shoulder moves anterially
What is lateral flexion?
Spine bent to side away from midline
What is Circumduction?
Combination of flexion, extension, abduction, adduction
Opposition and reposition?
Opposition - Thumb and pinky meet
Reposition - Thumb and pinky return to original position
