2.3 Exploding Cells And Acid Trouble Flashcards
Why do necrotic cells swell and burst?
Failure of action of Na,K,ATPase - sodium not being pumped out now so osmolality and oncotic pressure cause water to enter, swell, burst
Oncotic pressure?
Form of osmotic pressure exerted by proteins
Higher oncotic pressure - water follows
E.g. Albumin in blood vessels
Osmolarity and osmolality?
Osmolarity - conc of sol expressed as total no. Of solute particles per litre
Osmolality - conc of sol expressed as total no. Of solute per kg
pH equation?
pH = -log[H+]
One unit change in pH scale causes what fold change?
10 fold
[H+] conc for pH 7.0 and 7.4 respectively? (Will help to work out [H+] at other pH)
100, 40
What is shock?
Poor tissue perfusion, leads to cellular and tissue hypoxia, leads to lactic acid production, lowering pH - acidosis
