30 SEPT Flashcards
Repeated Measures
Using different conditions of the same variable on the same subjects
Independent Measures
Using different conditions of the same variable on different subjects
Order Effects
differences in research participants’ responses that result from the order (e.g., first, second, third) in which the experimental materials are presented to them.
Hypothesis
What a researcher believes will happen in the experiment.
Validity
How well a test measures what it is meant to measure.
Internal Validity
Whether the results are due to the independent variable or something else.
External Validity
How well the results of a study can be expected to apply in other settings.
Reliability
The consistency of a study or test. Eg. if you measure your weight with a scale twice in a day you expect a similar result both times.
Alternative Hypothesis
A hypothesis that suggests the independent variable will effect the dependent variable.
Null Hypothesis
A hypothesis that suggests the independent variable will have no effect on the dependent variable.
Demand Characteristics
Participants in a study changing their behaviour based on what they think the researchers want.
Control
Participants who do not receive the experimental treatment
Extraneous Variables
Variables that are not the independent variable but may still effect the experiment.
