30. Gullain-Barre syndrome Flashcards
1
Q
Define Gullain-Barre syndrome
A
Acute demyelinating disease of the peripheral nervous system.
2
Q
Pathophysiology of Guillain-Barre syndrome
A
Autoimmune making antibodies against myelin, resulting in decreased conduction velocity of nerve fibers. Causing ascending paralysis from toes to nose.
3
Q
Etiology of Guillain-Barre syndrome
A
GI or respiratory infection:
- Campylobacter jejuni
- HHV, CMV, EBV
4
Q
Symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome
A
- Ascending symmetric flaccid paralysis
- Loss of sensation, parasthesia
- Absent deep tendon reflexes
- Respiratory failure (paralysis diaphragm)
- Constipation, incontinence
5
Q
A
6
Q
Diagnosis of Guillain-Barre syndrome
A
- Lumbar puncture: incr. prot wo. incr. WBC
- EMG: low nerve conduction velocity
- Serology: pathogens
7
Q
Treatment of Guillain-Barre syndrome
A
- IVIG
- Plasmapheresis
- Supportive: cardiopulmonary monitoring
