Q

What is reliability ?

A

Reliability refers to how well research can be replicated at another time. It refers to the consistency of the research findings

Q

What is external reliability?

A

Producing the same results each time the test / study is carried out (replication)

Q

What is internal reliability?

A

This is concerned with the consistency within a test. It is usually associated with questionnaires and tests eg personality

Q

What is observer reliability?

A

When 2 or more observers produce the same record of their observations

Q

What is the split half method?

A

This compares a persons performance on two halves of a test or questionnaire. You would expect a persons performance on the first half of a test that was measuring extraversion, for example, to be consistent with their performance on the second half of the test.

Q

What is the test retest method?

A

This is where a test is repeated several times using the same participants. If it is reliable you would expect the same or very similar results each time from the same individuals. For example, you would get 20 people to sit gcse maths tests, then get the same 20 people to sit the test again 4 months later. You would then correlate the results and hopefully get a strong positive correlation

Q

What is inter observer/rater reliability?

A

This is where the observations of two or more observers are compared for similarity. The observers would first be trained in the use of a coding system so they can identify and are clear on exactly what they are looking for. Once they had completed the observation you would correlate their results on each coding category and hopefully obtain a strong positive correlation
