Q

Explain a “MOMENT”

A

If a weight (which is a force) is applied to a lever (which is a distance) a

“Moment” is generated.

It is a measure of the turning effect of the force about a point.

Moment (t-m) = force (t) x distance (m)

A distance alone or a weight alone does not make up a moment - it is the combination of the two.

Weight being applied is measured in tonnes (t)

Length of lever or distance from the pivot is measured in metres (m)

Resulting compound unit = tonnes x metres or tonne-metres (t-m).
