Q

Give a limitation for the effectiveness of psychological treatments.

A

P - There is support for the benefits of psychological treatments.
E - Pharoah et al reviewed the evidence for the effectiveness of family therapies.
E - It was concluded that there is moderate evidence to show that family therapy significantly reduces hospital readmission over the course of a year and improves quality of life for individuals.
Although the results of different studies were inconsistent and lacked quality meaning that the evidence for family therapies is weak.

E - Jauhar et al reviewed 34 studies of CBT for schizophrenia and found that it has a significant but fairly small effect on both positive and negative symptoms.

E - With CBT, out of 3 studies only 1 showed an improvement in symptoms.

L - Overall there is some evidence which supports psychological therapies but schizophrenia is still one of the harder mental problems to treat.

Q

Give a limitation to treatments in relation to quality of life.

A

P - A limitation of psychological treatments is that they improve quality of life for patients but are not cures.
E - CBT helps someone make sense and challenge their symptoms
Family therapy reduces stress of living in a family, for themselves and their family members.
Token economies help by improving their way of living to integrate themselves more into society.
