3. Quantitative chemistry Flashcards
What is the conservation of mass?
In a chemical reaction, atoms are not created or destroyed so total mass remains the same throughout
What is relative formula mass?
The sum of the relative atomic masses of each atom in a substance
What are the four state symbols and what do they stand for?
(s) = solid, (l) = liquid, (g) = gas, (aq) = aqueous solution
How can you tell when a symbol equation is balanced?
The number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides
What is the unit for concentration?
g/dm3
What formula is used to calculate concentration from mass and volume?
Concentration = mass/volume
How do you convert a volume reading in cm3 to dm3?
Divide by 1000
How can concentration be calculated in mol/dm3?
Concentration = moles of solute/volume
Give the value for Avogadro’s constant
6.02x10^23 particles
What formula is used to calculate the mass of a substance from the number of moles and the Mr?
Mass = Mr x moles
How is percentage yield calculated?
Actual yield/theoretical yield x 100
How is percentage atom economy calculated?
Mr of useful product/Mr of all products x 100
What is a titration?
Method used to calculate the concentration of an unkown solution
What volume does one mole of any gas occupy at room temperature and pressure?
24dm3
What equation links volume of any gas to the number of moles?
Volume = 24dm3 x moles
