3: Parenteral Nutrition Flashcards
What is parenteral nutrition
IV nutrition
What is total parenteral nutrition and what is the alternative
When solely IV nutrition is used. Alternative is using both IV and enteral feeding
When is parenteral nutrition used
Patient who is malnourished or at-risk of malnourishment with a non-functioning GI tract
What is always used preferentially to parenteral nutrition
Enteral nutrition
If a patient requires parenteral nutrition for less than two weeks what is used
Peripheral line
if a patient requires parenteral nutrition for more than two weeks, what is used
Central venous catheter
What is a central venous catheter also known as
PICC
Where does a PICC pass
Peripherally inserted central venous catheter
What is the advantage of PICC lines
- High concentrations of food
- Can be maintained for long time-periods
What are main disadvantages to PICC lines
- infection
- risk of insertion include pneumothorax and cardiac tamponade
What is peripheral parenteral nutrition (PNN)
Nutrition is given via peripheral veins
When is peripheral parenteral nutrition used
- Cannot use central eg. due to sepsis
- Short-term
What is an advantage of peripheral parenteral nutrition
Easy recognition of phlebitis
What is the problem with peripheral lines for feeding
- High concentrations can cause thrombophlebitis. Therefore can only be given when fat content is high due to protection
