3- Monitoring Part 3 Flashcards
Using equipment what 2 things can be measured regarding the respiratory system?
End-tidal carbon dioxide (Adequacy of respiration)
Blood gases - oxygen and CO2
Why is it important to consider resp rhythm & efforts as well as rate?
A big difference between 12bpm that is shallow/insufficient vs 12bpm that is deep/ sufficient
What does a capnograph measure?
EtCO2
measures CO2 in air that is breathed in and out
What are the 3 factors that capnograph can tell us about the body?
Tissue metabolism
Perfusion
Ventilation
A change in ETCO2 values suggests an alteration in one or more of these parameters
What is the normal EtCo2 range for dogs & cats?
Dogs = 35-45mmHg
Cats = 28-45mmHg
T/F EtCo2 is approx 5mmHg lower than actual blood levels
True
T/F Hyperthermia will lead to an decrease in co2 production (Hypocapnia)
False
Hyperthermia leads to an increase co2 production (Hypercapnia)
What does arterial blood gas measure?
Levels of arterial oxygen and carbon dioxide- useful for looking at lung function
Why is it important to listen to lung sounds
RR does not provide any info on the quality of ventilation or oxygenation
What can venous blood gas analysis be useful for
useful for metabolic function
