3- Anaesthesia for sicker patient II-IV Flashcards
What is the ASA classification?
American Society of Anesthesiologists - Physical status classification
Classification based on how fit an animal is for anaesthesia
Category II ASA physical status
Animal with Mild systemic disease that is well compensated
Category III ASA physical status
Animal with Severe systemic disease & animal is not compensating fully
Category IV ASA physical status
Animal with poorly compensated disease- there is a constant threat to life
Category V ASA physical status
Animals not not expected to survive the surgery
What does NT-proBNP indicate?
Blood test which indicates myocardial disease
Animals with congestive heart failure may have a longer onset time of drugs because?
Poor peripheral perfusion
How can cardiovascular disease cause longer duration of action of drugs?
Blood flow to the liver reduced? - take longer tine for drugs to reach the liver & be metabolised
What conjunction of drugs is ideal to use in cardiovascular patients?
Midazolam & opioid
Alfaxalone & opioid
these combos less likely to affect the cardiovascular system
T/F Inhalation agents depress myocardial function
True
Why is important to avoid stress in cardiovascular patients?
Worsens hypercapnia (^ co2 in the blood)
Why do we need to be careful with IVFT in cardiovascular patients?
Can create more work for the heart
what can a gallop rhythm suggest
is a good indicator of myocardial disease
