What are indications for orchiectomy?
Sterilisation, behaviour, testicular tumours or torsion, avoid hormonally dependent disease e.g. prostate changes
What is the only type of aggression castration will reduce?
Only dog-dog aggression - NOT strangers or fearfulnes

Urine marking and roaming
Which behaviours are reduced following castration in cats?
Fighting, roaming and spraying
What is traditional timing for castration?
6-8 months

Fewer complications, faster recovery, retain juvenile appearance, behaviour

Increased hip dysplasia and sexual behaviour

BMR decreases

Osteosarcoma if done below 12 months

Why do you do a pre-scrotal incision?
Scrotal would swell - very painful
What are the indications for scrotal ablation?
Pendulous scrotum, trauma, tumour, urethrostomy
What do you do if you get a haematoma following castration?
Do a celiotomy, go to inguinal ring, ligate the artery intra-abdominally
In which location is the blood supply to the prostate?
Dorsolateral (prostatic artery, urethral, cranial and causal vesical)
In which location is the blood supply to the urethra?
Central
What causes a paraprostatic cyst?
Mullerian duct remnant
How does testosterone affect cartilage growth?
Facilitates cartilage growth and maturation in the physis so if neutered early get delayed closure
Process of penile amputation?
Ligate caudal superficial epigastric, castrate, scrotal or perineal urethrostomy
Which antibiotics are best for the prostate?
A basic, lipid soluble one eg erythromycin, TMPS, fluoroquinolones
