3: Machining Flashcards
Milling/Routing - Definition
Uses rotary cutters to remove material from a workpiece by advancing in a direction at an angle with the axis of the tool
Drilling - Definition
Used to create round holes in a workpiece using a rotating drill bit.
Turning - Definition
Where a cutting tool removes material from the external surface of a rotating workpiece to shape it.
Stamping - Definition
Uses a press to form or cut metal sheets into specific shapes.
Pressing - Definition
Uses a press to apply pressure to a material, deforming it to create a specific shape.
Milling/Routing - Process
- The workpiece is fixed on a table and fed against a rotating cutter.
- The cutter removes material to form the desired shape.
- The movement can be either vertical or horizontal.
Drilling - Process
- The drill bit is mounted on a spindle and rotated at high speed.
- The workpiece is clamped, and the drill bit is fed into the material, cutting away material to form a hole.
Turning - Process
- The workpiece is clamped onto a lathe and rotated at high speeds.
- A cutting tool is then moved linearly along the surface of the workpiece, removing material to create the desired shape.
Stamping - Process
- The metal sheet is placed on a stamping press where a die shapes or cuts the metal with a single or series of high-pressure strikes.
- Stamping can include operations like punching, blanking, embossing, and coining.
Pressing - Process
- The material is placed between two halves of a mold or die, and pressure is applied via a press machine.
- This can involve cold pressing, where the material is shaped at room temperature, or hot pressing, where heat is applied to aid the forming process.
Milling/Routing - Examples
Creating slots, grooves, and complex three-dimensional shapes on parts such as engine components and molds.
Drilling - Examples
Producing holes for fasteners like screws and bolts in manufacturing and construction.
Turning - Examples
Manufacturing cylindrical components such as shafts, bolts, and pulleys.
Stamping - Examples
Producing automotive body panels, metal enclosures, and household appliances.
Pressing - Example
Forming metal components like car parts, electronics enclosures, and packaging materials
