2: Performance Characteristics of Materials Flashcards
Conductivity (Thermal)
Allows transfer of heat energy through material
Conductivity (Electrical)
Allows flow of electrical current through material (Brass, Copper)
Strength
Bending, Compressive, Tension, Shear, Torsion
Elasticity
Ability to be deformed & then returned back to original form after force is removed (rubber bands)
Plasticity
Ability to be permanently deformed (shaped) & retain deformed shape (paper clip)
Malleability
Ability to withstand deformation by compression without cracking (Gold, Silver, Aluminium, Zinc, Tin, Copper, Lead, Iron)
Ductility
Ability to be drawn out under tension & decrease cross-sectional area without cracking (Copper, Gold, Malleable Iron. Mild Steel. Platinum)
Hardness
Ability to resist abrasive wear such as scratching, indentation, or cutting (Bronze, Cast Iron)
Toughness
Ability to absorb impact force without breaking (Mild Steel, Polycarbonate)
Durability
Ability to withstand general wear over a period of time
Biodegradability
Ability to naturally decompose by actions of bacteria or other living organisms
