3/20- Blood Vessels (Exam 3) Flashcards
What is a portal system?
Specialized system of veins
Capillaries—-> venuoles —-> veins—-> venuoles—-> capillaries
What is a hepatic portal system?
Liver
Capillary bed in intestinal tract
Ends in capillary bed of liver
What are the 3 layers of the wall (tunica) of a vessel?
1) tunica Externa/ tunica adventitia- CT (outer layer)
2) tunica media- smooth muscle (middle layer)
3) tunica Interna/ endothelium- simple squamous epithelium (inner layer)
What is an artery?
Tunica media- thickest layer
Round cross section
Thicker walls
Endothelium is folded
What is a vein?
Tunica Externa- thickest layer
Not a round cross section
Thin walls
Endothelium is smooth
What is blood pressure?
Pressure of the blood in the arteries of the systemic circuit
What is systole?
Contraction of heart chamber
What is diastole?
Relaxation of the heart chamber
What is systolic pressure?
Maximal pressure when the left ventricle contracts
Wall expands
What is diastolic pressure?
Minimal pressure when the left ventricle relaxes
Wall collapses
What is a sphygmomanometer?
Blood pressure cuff
On brachial artery
What is the stethoscope?
Auscultation of artery
If there’s an obstruction you’ll hear it
What is laminar flow?
Smooth uninterrupted flow without any disruption
No sound produced
What is a bruit?
Sounds in vessel you hear if there’s an obstruction
What happens when the cuff pressure = systolic pressure in vessel?
Blood will squirt through obstruction with contraction of left ventricle
Produces tapping noise
