1/29- Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
System of endocrine glands that secrete hormones
What are the characteristics of endocrine glands?
No ducts
Secrete into blood
Hormones- chemical messengers
- deliver a message
- give structure an instruction to do something
Has a target
Works hand in hand with nervous system to control and regulate the human body
What is the target?
Received message of hormone
Target organ
Target tissue
Target cell- TRUE TARGET
What are pituitary glands also called?
Hypophysis
What is the anterior pituitary gland called?
Adenohypophysis
What is the posterior pituitary gland called?
Neurohypophysis
What connects the hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary gland?
Infundibulum
What are the characteristics of the thyroid gland?
Has fluid filled follicules that contains a protein
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Cells in between the follicular cells are parafollicular cells
What do the follicular cells secrete?
Triiodothyronine or T3
Tetraiodothyronine or T4 or Thyroxine
What do the parafollicular or c cells secrete?
Calcitonin
What is the characteristic of the pancreas?
Both endo (circular structures) and exo (digestive function)
What are the 3 major hormones islets of langerhans or pancreatic islets produce?
1) insulin
2) Glucagon
3) Somatostatin
What is the outer gland called in the adrenal gland or suprarenal gland?
Andrenal cortex
What is the inner gland of the adrenal gland or suprarenal gland called?
Adrenal medulla
What are the 3 parts of the adrenal cortex?
Outside to inside
1) zona glomerulosa
2) zona fasciculata
3) zona reticularis
Beneath is adrenal medulla
