3/11- Blood (Exam 2) Flashcards
What tissue is blood?
CT
What is the non living stuff in CT called?
Matrix
What is blood plasma?
Liquid portion of blood
Matrix of blood
What’s is serum or sera (pl)?
Remove chemical clotting agents of plasma and the left overs are the sera
What are the 3 formed elements of blood?
1) erthrocytes
2) leukocytes
3) thrombocytes
What are the parts of thrombocytes we see?
Platelets
What are the 3 important surface antigens for distinguishing blood type?
1) A
2) B
3) D = Rh
Surface antigen A?
Type A blood
Surface antigen B?
Type B
Surface antigens together AB?
Type AB blood
Neither surface antigens A or B?
Type O
What is Rh?
If you have it it’s Rh+
If you don’t have it it’s Rh-
If you have Type A blood what are you born with?
Anti-B antibodies
Attack B surface antigens
If you have Type B blood what are you born with?
Anti-A antibodies
If you have Type AB blood what are you born with?
No antibodies
If you have Type O blood what are you born with?
Both Anti- A and anti-B antibodies
If you have Rh blood what are you born with?
No one is born with Rh antibodies
What does sensitized mean?
When a person with Rh negative blood is exposed to Rh positive blood
Immune system creates antibodies to fight it
Can Rh+ blood get both Rh- and Rh+ blood?
Yes
Can Rh- blood get both Rh- and Rh+ blood?
No
Bodies can become sensitized
Can only get + once
What type of blood is the universal recipient?
AB+
What type of blood is the universal donor?
O-
What is Anti-Sera and kinds?
Blood serum taken from blood plasma
Antibodies in serum
3 kinds
1) Anti- A
2) Anti- B
3) Anti-Rh
What is agglutination?
RBC exposes to wrong antibodies
(Agglutinate)
Clumping that occurs tells you what type you are
What is the hematocrit or Packed Cell Volume (PCV)?
What percent of patients blood is occupied by RBC
PCV= (volume of packed RBC’s/ total volume of sample) x 100
Help diagnose anemia
What chemical are capillary tubes treated with to slow clotting in blood?
Heparin
It’s called Heparinized
What are 2 basic kinds of white blood cells?
1) Granulocytes
2) Agranulocytes
What are granulocytes and what are the 3 kinds?
Stain absorbing granulos in cytoplasm
1) Neutrophils
2) Eosinophils
3) Basophils
What are agranulosa and the 2 kinds?
Lack stain absorbing granulos in cytoplasm
1) monocytes
2) lymphocytes
What are the Eosin stain?
Red
Acidic pH
What are the basic stain?
Blue
Alkaline
How can you tell neutrophils on a slide?
Neutral color
3-5 lobes as nucleus
How can you tell eosinophils on a slide?
Red granulos
2 nucleus
How can you tell basophils on a slide?
Purple granulos
Can’t see nucleus
How can you tell monocytes on a slide?
Big
Nucleus intended to be round but look like someone bashed the sides
Kidney, hourglass, Pac-Man shape
How can you tell lymphocytes on a slide?
Fairly small
Large round nucleus fills the whole cell
