What did Jesus empty Himself of during the Incarnation? What are some other views and why are they not a better option?
He emptied himself of glory - John 17 he asks God to restore His glory.
Many believe He emptied Himself of deity - Luke 2 He says He’s in His father’s house. If everyone believed He was God, so did He!
communicable and/or incommunicable attributes, certain attributes - He still displayed in John 8 Eternity, Immutability, Self Existence. John 10 - Love, Goodness, Freedom. John 14 - Triunity, truth. Matthew 9 - Omniscience, mercy. He did not get rid of His attributes
Romans 5:10
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
Emphasize death and life. While Christ’s death was helping us get reconciled to God because He took upon our sins and died for us so that we would not have to die and so that sin would not separate us from God, we are saved by His life. This is because the whole purpose was not only to be reconciled to God, but also to have life.
How does the Incarnation reconcile God and man?
Jesus was both God and Man. He reconciled us through His nature.
1 Corinthians 15:14 and 17
Everything hangs on the resurrection ,and this is just like Romans 5:10. In 1 Corinthians 15:14 and 17, Paul says that if the resurrection had not happened, our faith would be empty and we would still be in our sin. WHy? God’s purpose was for us to be “saved by His life.” He wanted us to be given life because that was one of His goals. It was sin that separated us from God and made us die, so it was Christ’s resurrection that gave us back life.
If Christ had not risen again, our “faith would be empty” because we would still be dead in our sins and Christ would not have finished His task, which was to give us life.
