How to carry out a flame test:
- A platinum or nichrome wire is dipped into concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove any impurities.
- The wire is dipped into the salt being tested so some salt sticks to the end.
- The wire and salt are held in a non-luminous (roaring) bunsen burner flame.
- The colour is observed.
Colour of the flame for: Lithium
Red
Colour of the flame for: Sodium
Yellow
Colour of the flame for: Potassium
Lilac
Colour of the flame for: Calcium
Orange-red
Colour of the flame for: Copper (II)
Blue-green
If chloride ions are present:
White precipitate of silver chloride will form
If bromide ions are present:
Cream precipitate of silver bromide will form
If iodide ions are present:
Yellow precipitate of silver iodide will form
If sulfate ions are present:
White precipitate of barium sulphate will form
