1g. Covalent Bonding Flashcards
How are covalent bonds formed?
A covalent bond is formed between 2 non-metal atoms by sharing electrons in order to fill their outer shell
What is covalent bonding?
A strong attraction between a shared pair of electrons and 2 nuclei
Why do simple substances have low melting points?
Because the forces of attraction between molecules are weak and easy to overcome
Why does the boiling point increase when the relative mass increases?
Because larger molecules (more mass) have more forces of attraction to break
why substances with giant covalent structures are solids with high melting and boiling points
Because they have a giant covalent structure with many strong covalent bonds that require a lot of energy to break.
What are allotropes?
Allotropes are different forms of the same element
Examples of allotropes
Diamond, graphite, C60 fullerene
Electric current is…
A flow of charged particles that can move
Covalent compounds can/can’t conduct electricty
Covalent compounds do not conduct electricity
