2A Cells as the Basis of Life Flashcards
What are living things?
Anything that can move, respire, sense, grow, reproduce, maintain equilibrium, excrete waste, and take up nutrients
Movement
Respiration
Sense
Grow
Reproduction
Equilibrium
Excretion
Nutrition
What is Equilibrium?
all living things maintain a stable internal environment unique to individual species, meaning that organisms can tolerate environmental changes
What is cell theory?
- All living things are made up of cells
- Cells are the smallest nad most basic units of life
- All cells come from pre-existing cells
What are prokaryotes?
A group of single-celled organisms with no nucleus and a circular loop of DNA.
eg. Bacteria and Archaea
What are eukaryotes?
A group of single and multi-celled organisms with a nucleus and linear strands of DNA.
eg. Animals, plants, fungi, and protists
What is a plasma membrane?
AKA cell membrane is the phospholipid bilayer and embedded proteins that separate the intracellular and extracellular environment
What is cytosol?
Aqueous fluid that surrounds the organelles inside the cell
What are ribosomes?
i luv small childs
What is DNA?
a double-stranded nucleic acid chain made up of nucleotides. DNA carries the instructions needed for proteins which are required for cell and organism survival
What is the nucleus?
A double membrane-bound organelle that protects and confines the genetic information of a call
What is a plasmid?
A small, circular loop of DNA that is separate from a chromosome, typically found in bacteria
