2.8 Classification Flashcards
Species
Similar individuals that are different to other species. Can reproduce to give living fertile offspring
Classification
Organisation of living organisms into groups
Binomial system
Universal naming system, 1st is generic, 2nd is specific(lowercase)
Why does naming change
Constantly making new scientific discoveries
Phylogeny
Natural classification, based on evolutionary relationships and homologous characteristics…arranged in hierarchy
Taxonomy
Biological classification, artificial. Based on useful differences at the time.
Taxonomical rankings
Kingdom, phylum(body plan), class, order(common features), family, genus, species
Difficulty in defining species
Artificial selection, extinction= lack of records, strike species, boundaries separating organisms
