2.2 DNA and Meiosis Flashcards
Dna function
Pass hereditary material down generations
Nucleotide
Base phosphate and deoxyribose sugar, joined by condensation between phosphate and sugar
Adaptions of dna
Stability, size, protection
Gene
Section of dna that codes for a polypeptide
Triplet code
Each amino acid is 3 bases because there is 20 amino acids. Some amino acids have more than one code, some codes don’t have an acid
Prokaryotic
No chromosomes
Eukaryotic
Chromosomes
Dna structure
Held in place with histone proteins, chromosomes coil, loop, combine to form molecules
Homologous chromosomes
Determine same genetic characteristics but not same alleles, one from each parent
Crossing over
Chromatids twist around each other, tension breaks sections off and they switch over
Independent segregation
Random lining up of chromosomes
Meiosis
Homologous pair up, separate into cells, chromatids separate into 4 haploid cells
