Vitiligo
mechanism, skin, association, tx
Acquired autoimmune against melanocytes - well demarcated patches of depigmentation
Assoc with thyroid dysfx, alopecia areata, DM
Tx: Phototherapy, topical steroids, topical immunosuppressants, laser, depigmentation (all lighter)
Alopecia Areata (mechanism, Assoc)
Acquired autoimmune disorder against hair follicles = recurrent patches of non-scarring alopecia in well demarcated round patches
Assoc: significant psychosocial/emotional distress, THYROID DISEASE, vitiligo, DM, CHECK TSH
Acrodermatitis Enteropathica
what it is, skin, onset
Zinc deficiency
Perioral/perianal erosive, scaly rash
Onset in babies after birth/weaning from breast feeding
Scurvy
what it is, skin
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency bleeding gingivae, petechiae, ecchymoses, follicular hyperkeratosis, corkscrew hairs
Lynch Syndrome
locations, assoc
Colorectal, endometrial, ovarian, gastric carcinomas
Sebaceous adenoma/carcinoma
Sweet’s Syndrome
signs, assoc, tx
Skin with neutrophilic infiltrate
Fever, malaise
assoc with malignancy (leukemia), IBD, drugs, pregnancy infections
Tx: oral prednisone
Signs of Cirrhosis
Dilated abdominal wall veins (caput medusae)
Spider angiomas
Sign of Lichen Planus
Flat topped violaceous papules
Cutaneous manifestations of ESRD
- Pruritis
- Calciphylaxis: violaceous, reticulated patches. Bullae > tissue necrosis > ulceration. PAINFUL in fatty areas of body (thigh, butt)
Addison’s Disease skin manifestations
diffuse hyperpigmentation from activity of melanocyte-stimulating hormone
Skin manifestations of Diabetes Mellitus
Acanthosis nigricans - velvety, hyperpigmented plaques in flexural surfaces - in overweight persons with insulin resistance
Pyoderma Gangrenosum
Skin, Assoc, Tx
Ulcer with necrotic undermined borders, painful in lower extremities
Assoc with IBD, arthritis, leukemia
Tx: systemic steroids, TNFa-i’s, Rituximab
Dermatitis Herpetiformis
what it is, sx, tx
Cutaneous manifestation of celiac disease (NO GLUTEN)
Intense pruitis
tx: gluten free diet and dapsone
Most common other autoimmune disorder in patients with alopecia areata
