2.6 Measuring the Distribution of Organisms Flashcards
Name 2 ways quantitative data can be obtained.
- random quantitative sampling using a quadrat
* sampling along a transect
What is a quadrat?
A square frame which may be subdivided into a grid.
How are quadrats used?
They are placed randomly in the habitat to outline your sample area to investigate the population of plants and slow animals, used for estimating things
Why is the sample size important?
To ensure the sample is representative of the whole area
What is an estimate given as (units)?
A mean per square metre
What is a transect?
A line marked between two points, area along a stretch
How are transects used?
It shows distribution of organisms along a line
Is a transect random?
No
How long on average is each length of a quadrat?
0.5 metres
How do you make a quadrat a fair test?
Use the same size square and measure as many areas as you can
What can be used to show how physical factors might have an effect on the distribution of organisms in a particular habitat?
Quantitative data, which can be used to find the range, mean, median and mode
