2.3 How Plants Use Glucose Flashcards
Name 5 uses of the soluble glucose produced by photosynthesis
- converted into insoluble starch for storage
- used for respiration
- converted into fats and oils for storage
- used to produce cellulose which strengthens cell walls
- used to produce proteins
What do plants and agal cells also need a supply of in order to produce proteins?
Mineral and nitrate ions
Where do plants absorb nitrate ions?
In the soil
Where do algae absorb nitrate ions from?
The water they live in
Name 3 substances used for storage in plants
- starch
- fats
- oils
What is glucose?
Simply covalently bonded sugar, needed for respiration in plants
What is starch?
A glucose polymer, it is insoluble so it won’t affect transport of water through the plant
Where is starch stored?
Every cell
What does xylem do?
Transports water up to the leaves
What does phloem do?
Transports sugar from leaves to the rest of the plant
What is a vascular bundle?
The xylem and phloem tubes next to each other
What are amino acids?
The building blocks of proteins
Where are the fats and oils stored?
In seeds
