2.1 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What does chlorophyll do?
Absorbs the Suns light energy
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
What organisms can photosynthesis only be carried out by?
Green plants and algae
Explain the 3 step process to photosynthesis
- Co2 taken in by leaves and water is taken up by the roots
- The chlorophyll traps the light energy and it is transferred to chemical energy
- This energy is used to convert the co2 and water into O2 and glucose
Name a by product of photosynthesis
Oxygen
What is some of the glucose converted into and why?
Starch, because it can be stored
Why do we do the iodine test for starch?
To identify the starch in the leaves and show that photosynthesis has occurred
What is the positive result of the iodine test for starch?
If starch is present then the iodine solution will turn blue/black
What types of leaves have patches of white and green?
Variegated leaves
What is the balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6Co2 + 6H2O —> c6h12o6 + 6o2
Why is too much light dangerous for the plant?
It damages the plant
