256-259 Flashcards
1
Q
How does pulmonary ventilation relate to intensity of exercise?
A
Pulmonary ventilation is the exchange of air between the lungs and the environment, including inhalation and exhalation. This can be matched to our intensity of exercise very closely.
2
Q
What two main factors affect external respiration at the lungs?
A
The increase of:
- VE (ventilation)
- blood flow to the lungs.
3
Q
Extraction of oxygen from the tissues is increased due to which four main factors?
A
- Low partial pressure of oxygen (PO₂) in tissues.
- Increased carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels leading to the Bohr effect.
- Higher acidity (lower pH), also contributing to the Bohr effect.
- Increased temperature in active tissues.
4
Q
What is a-vO2 diff?
A
Difference between the amount of O2 in the artery and vein reflects the amount of O2 that was delivered to the muscle
5
Q
Define Asthma
A
- Asthma: a disease characterized by spasms in the smooth muscles that line the respiratory system. An oversecretion of mucus and swelling of the cells lining the respiratory tract.
6
Q
COPD
A
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a general term that describes a family of diseases that lead to a dramatic reduction in airflow through the respiratory system
