2.5 Nomenclature Flashcards
who sets the rules for naming nomenclature
international union of pure and applied chemistry
using the IUPAC nomenclature system we can…
derive the name of an organic compound from its structure and draw the structure of a molecule based on its name
what are the three portions of a compounds systematic name
a prefix
a root name
a suffix
what does the prefix of the name tell us
about eh substance on the molecule
what does the root on the name tell us
how many Cs in the longes chain and if/where there are any alkenes of alkynes
what does the suffix of the name tell us
details about the principal (highest priority) functional group
what is the suffic in alkane
ane
what is the root names for all the roots from 1 to 10
meth
eth
prop
but
pent
hex
hept
oct
non
dec
what is there is no substituents (chain coming off main chain)
no prefix
how are alkane substituents named
by using the appropreate root name and adding ly at the end
i.g.
#C:4
root name:but
substitunt name: butyl
where do substituents go
usually there is more then one place it could go so the substituent goes to the smaller numbering
what do you do if there is multiple substituents
you list them in alphabetical order not numerical
what do you do if there is mutiples of the same kind of substituent
you add a greek descriptor to the front of the substituent prefix
what are the greek descriptors from 1 to 10
di
tri
tetra
penta
hexa
hepta
octa
nona
deca
when listing in alphabetical order do greek prefixes count for alphabetization
no they do not
