2.5 Metabolism and Adverse Conditions Flashcards
What is Dormancy?
A part of some organisms life cycle to allow survival during a period when the costs of continued normal metabolic activity would be too high
What 4 things decrease during dormancy?
Metabolic rate, heart rate, breathing rate and body temperature
Why is metabolic rate reduced by dormancy?
To save energy
What two types of dormancy are there?
- Predictive
- Consequential
What is predicted dormancy?
It occurs before the onset of adverse conditions
What is consequential dormancy?
It occurs after the onset of adverse conditions
When does hibernation occur?
During winter/low temperatures
When does aestivation occur?
High temperatures/drought
What is torpor?
A period of reduced activity in some animals with high metabolic rates
How does migration avoid metabolic adversity?
By expending energy to relocate to a more suitable environment
What are the two types of migratory behaviour?
- Innate
- Learned
Specialised techniques are used to study long-distance migration. Give 2 examples
- Satellite tracking
- Leg rings
